Pure, simple, silky, and decadent!
Hi again! I hope you’re all soaking up some of this beautiful sunshine! If you’re like me, I always become more aware of my skins needs for a good moisturizer as the weather warms up. This natural, relatively simple body butter recipe is an amazing addition to my morning routine to keep my skin happy! It’s always nice to have glowing, healthy skin as we break out our sundresses and swimsuits!
This body butter is chock full of incredible ingredients! The combination of butters provides ample amounts of vitamin A, E, and D as well as essential fatty acids. They’re all gentle moisturizers, promote skin elasticity, and some even provide natural sun protection! Please note: they don’t provide enough protection to act as actual sunscreen! Just think of it as giving your skin a sun-fighting boost. During the summer, we can take as much help as we can get, right?
There are dozens of recipes for homemade body butter out there, so there’s no shortage of ideas! I’ve seen everything ranging from simple two ingredient recipes to combinations of ten butters/oils/waxes. After several experiments, this is my favorite combo! It combines the benefits of some rich butters, isn’t as greasy as many of the other recipes I’ve tried, and is fairly cost friendly (it doesn’t require you to go out and purchase beeswax and a bunch of weird butters). Most of the ingredients can be purchased at your local health grocer or good ol’ Amazon. :)
This is also relatively simple to prepare! It will require a little effort to prep and clean up, but otherwise it’s basically as easy as making whipped cream. :) Depending on how quickly your mixture sets, you can have fresh, luxurious body butter in about 40 minutes, start to finish!
Another great thing about this recipe is how customizable it is! You can leave it plain to enjoy the natural light fragrances of the butters (which I usually prefer) or add a combination of essential oils to customize your scent preferences and skin needs! If you’re really not sure what you’re going to like, I suggest halving the recipe and experimenting with a few batches! Also, if you’re having difficulty tracking down any of the butters or oils, you can get creative with your combinations. If you do change the ratios, be aware that it will change the texture of your end result. Adding more almond or coconut oil will give you a much oilier result. Since I prefer body butters to be creamy and less greasy, I prioritize the hard butters. Arrowroot is also amazing at cutting the greasiness, so it’s something I always include!
A few notes about this body butter: This is best stored at room temperature. It will harden up a little, due to the natural properties of the ingredients, though it’s light enough to melt and absorb once it hits your skin. A little goes a long way! Start with a pea sized amount and work up as needed. It will start out a bit greasy on your skin but absorbs beautifully within a few minutes to leave you with smooth, silky skin! Also, don’t let the small measurements fool you: this recipe creates a whole pint of body butter! A great amount for lasting through the entire summer or dividing up to small jars for gifting!
For convenience, I’m including a printer friendly version of the recipe, then listing details and tips for each step below. If you’re new to creating body butter, I highly recommend reading through the tips before starting. :)
DIY Body Butter
½ cup mango butter
¼ cup cocoa butter
2 TBSP coconut oil
2 TBSP almond oil
10 drops vitamin E oil
1 TBSP arrowroot powder
10-30 drops essential oils of your choosing
Combine all the butters and oils in a glass bowl. Place glass bowl over pot with boiling water or microwave. Heat until all the butters have melted together, stirring occasionally. Stir in arrowroot powder. Place in refrigerator or freezer until opaque and slightly firm. Add mixture to stand mixer, add essential oils, and beat until white and fluffy. Store in airtight container.

I recommend gathering all your ingredients and tools before starting! It’s inevitable that your hands will get greasy while making this, so it’s easier to have everything pulled out and ready to go.
The ingredients I used are pictured below. These are all fairly cost-effective and accessible brands, but pure enough that I feel comfortable putting them on my skin! If you have favorite brands, feel free to use those instead.
I do highly recommend this mango and cocoa butter! This stuff is lasting me forever, thanks to the small amount needed for the body butter recipe. You can find them on Amazon. This cocoa and mango butter feel amazing and smell incredible. Since these are the main ingredients of the body butter, the quality in these butters shows!
Start by chopping the cocoa butter. It’ll need to be finely chopped so you can get a fairly accurate measurement. It also takes the longest to melt, so using small chunks will help speed up the melting process!
I’m not a huge fan of putting butter and oils in a microwave, so I just place a glass bowl on top of a small pan with water to create a double broiler. You can also place the ingredients in a glass measuring cup and set in boiling water. Or microwave (in a covered glass container) in thirty second intervals until melted! Once all the butters and oils have melted and combined, stir in the arrowroot powder. It’ll look a bit murky at this point. The arrowroot powder may sink to the bottom, but that’s perfectly fine!
Now it’s time to let it set up! This is a crucial step to creating a light, whipped body butter! You’ll want it to be similar in consistency to soft butter. It should be opaque and slightly firm. It takes about 20-30 minutes in the freezer or 1-2 hours in the refrigerator. If it hardens too much, simply leave out on the counter for a few minutes to let it soften slightly before whipping.
Here’s the fun part: whipping it up! If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can use a hand held one. I do not recommend trying to do this by hand, unless you happen to be Superwoman. For all of us mortals, you’ll want to spare your arms and use an electronic option. :) Also, if you would like to add essential oils, add them to the butter right before whipping! Get creative with your combo! I’ve been loving this blend for the summer: it’s a light and slightly sweet blend of lemon, orange, jasmine and ylang ylang. The cute name doesn’t hurt either. :)
Whip on medium-high to high for around 3-5 minutes. You’ll want to watch it closely: if it goes too long, it can get warm, start “melting”, and lose it’s fluffiness. If you notice that it’s collapsed, you can still save it! Stick the mixer bowl in the refrigerator for a few minutes to cool it down, then put it back on the mixer and beat away. It’s also fun to watch through this whipping process as the color progresses from yellow to white! It’s ready when the color is almost pure white, it’s over doubled in size, and the texture is light and super fluffy!
You’re done!!! Store in an airtight container, preferably with a lid that’s easy to get off with slick hands. ;) Since it does firm up a bit, it’s best to divide it into small containers right away if you plan on gifting it. If I’m keeping a batch, I usually divide it into two 8 oz glass containers or two ½ pint canning jars for easy storage. You can also find adorable 4 oz glass canning jars that are the perfect size for gifts! You are sure to wow your friends with a cute little jar of this luxurious homemade body butter!
